This project by architect Nauro
Jorge Esteves, of Niemeyer team, is the headquarters for the Federal
District Government. Its name is from a palm tree which is very
typical in the backlands called the buriti. The palm tree was
planted under orders from Engineer Israel Pinheiro, a constructor
and the new capital’s first mayor, in 1959. It was preserved as
Historical Heritage of the Federal District. In front of the palace
it is possible to see a copy of the famous sculpture of the Roman
She-Wolf nursing the twin brothers Romulo and Remo. The sculpture, a
present from the Italian government, is a symbol of the foundation
of Rome, Brasília’s sister-city, which also celebrates its

![PALÁCIO DA ALVORADA]()
Palace of Alvorada
The official residence of the
President of the Brazilian Republic is one of Oscar Niemeyer
masterpieces. It was designed in 1956, even before the choice of the
new capital’s Pilot Plan. It is a 2 floor rectangular building with
one underground floor, and the white marble columns are its main
element, since they frame the longitudinal façades that have become
a symbol of the capital. A small chapel on the side completes the
set. There are several works of art at the Alvorada, such as the
sculptures The Bathers by Ceschiatti and the Rite of Rhythms by
Maria Martins. The wall of golden tiles at the entrance hall was
done by Athos Bulcão as were the chapel’s door and stained glass
windows. The landscaping was the work of Roberto Burle Marx.
